IPv4 vs IPv6 Explained

IPv4 vs IPv6 explained

IPv4 and IPv6 are two versions of IP addresses used to identify devices on the internet. Every device connected to the web — from phones to servers — needs an IP address to communicate.

What is IPv4?

IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) is the most widely used system today. It uses a 32-bit format and looks like 192.168.1.1. IPv4 supports around 4.3 billion unique addresses, which seemed enough when the internet was created — but is now running out due to massive global usage.

What is IPv6?

IPv6 is the newer version designed to replace IPv4. It uses a 128-bit format and looks like 2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334. This provides an almost unlimited number of addresses, ensuring the internet can continue to grow.

Key differences between IPv4 and IPv6

Which one am I using?

Most users today run both IPv4 and IPv6 (dual-stack). Your ISP and device determine which one is used. Your current IP version is shown above on this page automatically.

Why IPv6 matters

IPv6 is essential for the future of the internet. It allows billions of new devices to connect, improves performance in some cases, and removes the need for complex workarounds like NAT (Network Address Translation).

Summary

IPv4 is still dominant, but IPv6 adoption is growing fast. Over time, IPv6 will become the standard as more networks upgrade and demand increases.
